I like turtlenecks but I'm not a dork
When I was younger, I always associated turtlenecks with being un-cool. It didn’t help that they were worn by most of the so-called “dorks” depicted in the TV shows and movies I watched, topped off by a pair of glasses and long socks of course. Now, fast-forward ten years, when I look at my wardrobe I realize that a small portion of it reflects that exact same style. I have somehow morphed into a similar pattern of dressing, glasses and all.
In my opinion, the turtleneck has become such an underrated garment and really deserves more recognition, since it has advantages that stretch far beyond it’s un-cool connotations. Aside from the terrible name (there’s absolutely nothing sexy about a turtle’s neck) I have developed an immense appreciation for these long-collared garments.
They clearly offer more benefits in the warmth and body heat department, which is a plus for me since I tend to run cold. They also make the perfect base for layering in fall weather with things like vest, jackets and scarves.
Then there is the enhancement or illusion of physical features to take into consideration. I’m a person who possesses a long neck, and it is probably one of my biggest insecurities. So the fact that turtlenecks have the ability to create the appearance of a shortened neck makes me a fan. I happen to be the owner of a very small chest too. The good thing though is that turtlenecks (or any other kind of top with a high neckline) make boobs look bigger! So, if you’re like me and you’re lacking in the boob area, pick yourself up some turtlenecks and thank me later.
Finally, turtlenecks illicit a feeling of chic, professionalism. Especially form-fitting ones in solid, neutral colours. They also remind me of Audrey Hepburn in Funny Face which, regardless of turtlenecks, is an amazing movie for costumes over-all.
Oh and cozy, they make me feel cozy too :)
