My favourite movies of late
I have to be upfront and honest about something.
I am not a movie person. I never really have been. Normally I prefer watching a TV series because I always find it too hard to sit still for the full length of a movie. Plus, I feel like with movies you have to really concentrate and pay attention. It’s not like a series where if you miss something it will likely come up again in later episodes and you can piece things together.
This year things have changed though. Either my attention span has lengthened or I’ve just been watching more interesting movies. Regardless, I’ve acquired a small collection of movies that I thoroughly enjoy.
The Grinch (2018)
This Grinch movie was by far my favourite of them all, specifically because of the incredible animation. I saw it in the theatre and it looked amazing on the big screen. The vibrant colours and little details really won me over. The very first movie I actually ever saw in theatre was the live-action version of The Grinch with Jim Carrey, when I was about 4 years old. I remember it kind of freaked me out, so I always had mixed feelings about all of The Grinch movies, but this recent version really re-assured my love for this Christmas classic.
I think any movie that is based off a true story automatically makes me like it, and that is the case with Bohemian Rhapsody. Even though this movie made me cry (a lot), I still loved it, and it was really cool getting to see the process behind how Queen made some of their biggest songs. The costuming was also a major highlight for me. I loved how the elaborateness of Freddie Mercury’s outfits worn on Queen’s rise to fame contrasted with the simplicity of what he wore at the Live Aid performance.
This one is undoubtedly another of my favourites because of the fantastic animation and graphics. I watched this movie at home but I bet it looks even more amazing on a big screen. The other thing I liked about it was how it included other versions of Spider-Man, especially Spider-Ham. Gotta love Spider-Ham.
Honestly, this one was a real eye-opener, and not at all what I expected it to be. I learned a lot about what life was actually like for the Jonas Brothers when they first started and how things changed the more famous they got. It really is a must-watch if you ever had any interest in them at all. They were my first concert so watching it gave me major nostalgia.
I don’t normally re-watch things, but with these four movies I would be open to making an exception. Definitely The Grinch movie at Christmas time, and maybe Bohemian Rhapsody again because there’s probably lots of little details that I missed the first time. Fall and winter are naturally the best times of year for movie watching, so I anticipate re-watching at least a couple of these soon. With snacks too of course :)
