9 year-old me was style and financial goals
A Lululemon Scuba Hoodie.
That was my first major clothing purchase and probably my first major purchase ever.
Let me set the scene for you:
I was 8 years-old, and living with my mom in a town house. One of our neighbours, an elderly woman with mobility issues, was paying me $5 a week to bring her garbage to the dumpster located on the other side of the parking lot. Now I must say, I was being grossly over-payed for this job. The dumpster was only about 20 feet from her backdoor and she lived a few houses down. When she first asked me to start doing it for her, I had originally asked for $2 a week, but she said “Well I’m nice so I’m going to give you $5” and I didn’t protest. So over time it didn’t take long for me to make a sizeable amount of money, well for a 8 year-old at least.
Now fast forward a few months to December 13th. One day after my birthday (so I was 9 now), and if I do recall I had just been gifted a pair Uggs, so I was definitely focused on trends at the time. My mom and I went to Lululemon so I could make my purchase. I believe the Scuba Hoodies were $100, and I was well aware that that would leave me with very little cash afterward, but I wanted it badly and was not prepared to leave the store without it. I knew what I wanted and was determined to get it. So after some time looking and trying on, I finally settled on a purple one with a weird polka-dot/ scribbly line pattern, that I remember thinking looked like cherries.
From then on that hoodie became an outfit staple for me. I wore it often, as it was actually quite practical for cold days given its fabric and thickness. However, once I hit the age of 12 or 13 , I had to let it go. I remember feeling quite okay with this, as I had grown out it not just in size but also style. I no longer liked the pattern that much, and had been wearing it less and less.
Lululemon Scuba Hoodies will always have a place in my heart. Even though I could care less whether my hoodie came from Lululemon or not now, I’m pretty proud of my younger-self for having the fore-thought to save up for something like that.
I will forever be striving to have the financial discpline of little Cloe.
